Build a Partnership with Your Board

As CEO, you’re accountable for the company’s performance—but you don’t have direct authority over one of the groups most critical to your success: the board. That relationship can become especially complicated as expectations shift, directors change, and your own influence grows. Here’s how to adapt as the relationship evolves.

Establish trust early. Invest time in one-on-one relationships with directors so you can understand how they think and what matters most to them. Clarify expectations around strategy, governance, communication, and the level of detail the board needs.

Shape the partnership. As your credibility grows, help ensure the board has the skills your strategy requires. Encourage broad participation, use your lead director or chair as a sounding board, and focus meetings on strategic questions where directors can add value.

Keep constructive pushback alive. Deep trust can make boards less likely to publicly question your plans or underlying assumptions. Watch for signs of complacency and make it easier for directors to share candid feedback.

Prepare for succession. Start succession conversations before they become urgent. Help shape a board that can support the next leader, then step back when it’s time for directors to choose your successor.
