Join a Community Celebration at Draper Drive Park, Aug. 18
The Aliver Foundation, in partnership with the City of Fairfax, Va., will host a family-friendly community celebration at Draper Drive Park at 9797 Beech Drive from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 18. The Foundation will donate highly visible, bright yellow, all-weather, climate-controlled, outdoor AED equipment.
The event will offer something for all ages, including children’s activities, an interactive CPR/AED demonstration by the City of Fairfax Fire Department, opportunities to meet first responders from the City of Fairfax Fire Department and Police Department, as well as a touch-a-truck featuring their emergency response vehicles.

Increased traffic is anticipated on and around the western portion of the Fairfax Campus on Thursday, August 27, as part of the Welcome Week Men's Soccer v. William & Mary match and Fireworks.
Tickets are $10 for the general public and can be purchased online or at the gate on game day. The match will begin at 7 p.m. and take place on the field next to the Field House on University Drive. Due to the anticipated crowd, the entry gate off of University Drive at Rapidan River Road will be used to allow overflow parking for the soccer game.
Following the match, fireworks will take place between 9 and 10 p.m. For safety reasons, a portion of Campus Drive will be closed during that time. Traffic will be directed to use the exit gate at Rapidan River Road/University Drive as a detour route.

Back to School, Aug. 24
On Aug. 24, students return to City of Fairfax Schools, Northern Virginia Community College, and George Mason University. Additionally, George Mason students will move into housing on the Fairfax campus beginning Aug. 16. During that time, roads around the campus may experience high traffic volume, so consider alternate routes when possible.
Here are some important safety tips to remember:
- Stop for school buses where students are loading or unloading.
- Watch out for school crossing guards and obey their signals.
- Look out for students, especially on crosswalks and near schools.
- Avoid distractions — and remember that you may not handle phones while driving.
