A Message From Your Commanders

Dear Sully Community Members,

I hope you’re enjoying your summer. Last month, Sully Station experienced a leadership change. Major Jane Russell, who served as our commander from January 2024, transitioned to a new role with the Internal Affairs Bureau’s Compliance Division. We thank her for her steady leadership and dedication to the Sully community.

I’m honored to step in as the new commander of the Sully District Station. During my 19 years with the Fairfax County Police Department, I have served as assistant commander of the Reston District Station, school liaison commander, and commander of the Mount Vernon District Station. Building strong relationships with residents, businesses, and community partners has always been central to my approach, and I look forward to meeting many of you soon.

Our officers remain committed to providing the highest level of service, and their efforts continue to contribute to an overall decline in crime countywide. A simple step like following our “9 O’clock Routine” each evening- locking vehicles, closing garage doors, and securing property- goes a long way toward preventing crime.

Last week, we had the pleasure of joining many of you for National Night Out. Neighborhoods across Sully hosted gatherings that brought community members and first responders together. We appreciated the chance to connect, listen, and strengthen the partnerships that make our community safer. Thank you to everyone who participated and welcomed us into your neighborhoods.

Your engagement truly makes a difference. When we work together, we create safer streets, stronger connections, and a more vibrant community for all.

National Night Out 2026 – A Night of Community and Connection

National Night Out on August 4 brought neighborhoods across the Sully District together for an evening of summertime fun and community spirit. Families gathered for barbeques, ice cream, and outdoor games while children enjoyed meeting officers, exploring police vehicles, and playing with friends. Throughout the night, officers and community leaders visited as many events as possible, sharing conversations, answering questions, and strengthening the partnerships that help keep our neighborhoods safe.

It was a wonderful night of connection, laughter, and neighborhood pride—and we’re already looking forward to National Night Out 2027.

The Fairfax County Police Helicopter Division provides tactical aviation support, aeromedical evacuation, search and rescue, and other specialized air‑support services throughout Fairfax County and the National Capital Region.

The most frequent missions involve assisting officers during crimes or critical incidents in progress — including robberies, burglaries, vehicle or foot pursuits, and searches for critical missing persons. The helicopter’s presence allows officers on the ground to respond more quickly, safely, and effectively.

If the helicopter is circling your neighborhood, it is actively supporting a mission. Residents can contact the Fairfax County Department of Public Safety Communications at 703‑691‑2131 to learn the general nature of the call the helicopter is assisting with.

The Fairfax County Police Helicopter Division also posts recent missions on its website, which is updated at least once a week.
