Grave fears are held for hundreds of people, many of them tourists, who are unaccounted-for. Video shows a massive wall of water sweeping over border posts and towns.

The flood is believed to have been started by a glacier avalanche, with a large-scale rescue response now underway to find those missing.

One eyewitness tells the ABC the first indication something was wrong was when he heard "a massive roar", before a wave arrived and washed away entire towns.
