Stand-up Comics
After years of fluctuating sales, manga seems to be settling in as
a permanent fixture of the American comics market, with both publishers and booksellers predicting continued growth for the genre. David Walter, who formed his own
data consultancy for publishers earlier this summer after departing BookScan, has launched
a “comprehensive study of the American book buyer.” Plus, we rounded up
this month’s biggest book club picks, including new novels by Chloe Benjamin and Liane Moriarty. In other news, Keanu Reeves will helm an
adaptation of Oliver Lowe’s upcoming thriller Kill Current for independent production studio The Arena, reports
Deadline. Netflix has reportedly
shelled out $1 million for a series adaptation of a short story by Nicholas Binge, per the
Hollywood Reporter. As the Small Press Expo
prepares to return to Maryland this weekend, the
Comics Journal tours executive director Warren Bernerd’s
home library and collection of comic book artifacts. Trailers have been released for Luca Guadagnino’s biopic about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman,
Artificial, and M. Night Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks’s
film adaptation of their 2025 romantic thriller,
Remain. Translator Emily Wilson’s new essay collection and Amanda Peters’s latest novel
make their debuts on the IPC’s Indie Press Top 40 bestseller lists. And
Random House Publishing Group president Sanyu Dillon talks shop with David Steinberger on the latest episode of the
Open Book podcast.

David Walter Launches Study of American Book BuyersThe Circana BookScan veteran’s new company, Bookinsights.ai, is rolling out Consumer Compass, a comprehensive survey of 5,000 consumers’ buying habits, modes of discovery, genre preferences, and more, with results expected in early November.
