The first three weeks of school have flown by! Our students have been busy learning classroom routines and important school procedures, including fire drills, cafeteria expectations, and more.
We are looking forward to a wonderful year filled with learning, growth, and community engagement. We cannot wait to partner with our families during upcoming events, including Back-to-School Night, AAP meetings, our Title I meeting, Curriculum Night, and more.

Each year, the United States commemorates the tragic loss of life on September 11, 2001, and the courage, compassion, and sacrifice that followed. The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, also called Patriot Day and 9/11, is a chance to reflect and act in service to others as a way of honoring those who were injured or killed in the terrorist attacks.
Today marks the 25th anniversary and commemoration of 9/11. We recognize the challenges that this important anniversary represents to our students, families, and staff. Many FCPS families and staff were personally impacted by 9/11 and the United States war on terror. Many families of military personnel and first responders experienced loss and hardship. Many of our Muslim families worry about sending their children to school each September 11th because of increased incidents of harassment, violence, and hate crimes experiences by Muslim Americans. Many of our students may feel anxious or confused when encountering details and images in the media or in their conversations inside and outside the classroom.
FCPS is committed to equitably supporting students as they navigate the challenging issues of our world. Our staff is empowered and expected to create and sustain inclusive, affirming learning communities that honor students' social-emotional needs and reject racism, hate, and bias.

Back To School Night and our Annual Title I Meeting will be Thursday, September 24th from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Come and meet your child's teacher, see their classroom, and learn about Title I schools.
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. A continuum of Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services is available to students in Grades K-12 and is designed to match services to each student’s unique academic needs.
Identification for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services occurs throughout the school year. Full-Time AAP services have two identification cycles:

Fall identification: Students in grades 3-7 who have enrolled in FCPS since January may be referred by October 15, 2026.

Spring identification: Any FCPS student in Grades 2-7 may be referred by December 15, 2026.
FCPS uses ability testing as one consideration in the holistic identification process for AAP services.
- All students in Grade 2 take the Naglieri General Ability Tests (NGAT).
- Students in Grades 3-6 who do not have a multi-domain ability test score take the NGAT.
- Students in Grades 3-6 may retake an ability test one time. Families may request the ability test retake by contacting Erica LoMonaco, School Testing Coordinator, at erlomonaco@fcps.edu by September 30.

Full-Time AAP Identification: Thursday, November 5 at 9:30 AM and again at 5:00 PM. You can attend in person at Hybla Valley or virtually. To attend the 9:30 AM session virtually, click here. Starting October 27, Hybla Valley will host a Free Food Market on the fourth Tuesday of each month beginning at 4:15 p.m., while supplies last. Families are encouraged to bring a bag to carry their food. Entry will be through Door 2. We look forward to supporting our school community!
Everything You Need to Do in SIS ParentVUE
Are you working your way through back-to-school forms and checklists? Make sure you have a SIS ParentVUE account for your family and log in to find important forms and updates.
- Be among the first to know about weather closings, bus delays, and other critical communications from your school and FCPS by providing your cell phone number and email in ParentVUE. To update your contact information in ParentVUE, click the “Online Packets” tab in the upper right of the screen, then click the “Online Verification/Update” icon.
- Submit daylong absences by clicking “Report Absence.”
If you do not have a ParentVUE account, contact Ms. Miller at jamiller@fcps.edu for an activation code and follow the directions on the SIS ParentVUE Account webpage.
Remember to Complete Permission Forms for School Resources
Families can now easily grant consent for their children to access a variety of school resources through the Parent Digital Consent system. This online tool can be accessed using your SIS ParentVUE account login. Parents can easily opt their child in or out of a variety of resources, including online educational tools, school counseling services, and more.

Lightspeed Parent Portal:
- Weekly Web Activity Reports: Detailed insights into their child’s online activity.
- Custom Block Lists: Ability to block specific websites during non-school hours.
- Internet Scheduling: Customizable, recurring routines to automate internet access (e.g., setting “Focus Time” for homework, a “Dinner” pause, or a weekday “Bedtime” routine).
How to Enroll:
- Use the Log In or Register link at the bottom of the Weekly Student Online Activity Report email.
- Click the “Login or Register” button to create an account.
- A verification email will be sent to the email address provided during the registration process to log in to the portal.
- Once in the portal, use the drop-down to toggle between students if there is more than one child.

Please stay in touch with us throughout the year by:
Three-hour early release will continue for the 2026-27 school year. The biggest difference is that the day of the week will change from Monday to Wednesday. A survey of steering committee participants showed that 83% voted in favor of moving the early release to Wednesdays. The main reason is due to the significant number of school holidays that fall on Mondays. Learn more about early release Wednesdays for Elementary Schools.
Reminders:
- K-6 Students can dismiss at 1:05 PM or 4:05 PM on early release Wednesdays. Parents and guardians will need to let the school know what time they'd like their students to go home.
- All PreK students dismiss at 4:05 PM on early release Wednesdays.

Please remind your students that all personal electronic devices, including cell phones and AirPods, must be turned off and stored in their backpacks throughout the entire school day. Students who do not comply with this expectation will be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R).
Hybla Valley Elementary Community,
This fall, the Department of Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS), in partnership with Franconia District Supervisor Rodney Lusk, will host Neighborhood College—a free, six-session certificate program open to Franconia District residents. Sessions will include guest speakers, interactive activities, breakout discussions, networking opportunities, and information about advisory boards and other volunteer opportunities.
This program is a great way to build leadership skills and strengthen community connections.
