Dear Sleepy Hollow Families
As we settle into the groove of the school year, reminders of our school motto, We Are Family, are everywhere throughout the building. We strive every day to build a strong bridge between home and school so our students feel safe, cared for, and ready to learn.
Here is a glimpse of how that motto is coming to life in our halls:
- Building Connections: Our younger students are sharing stories about their families, bonding over shared backgrounds, and learning to appreciate the wonderful differences that make each of us unique.
- Student Leadership: Older students are stepping up as role models and leaders, looking out for younger siblings, cousins, and neighbors across the school.
- Curriculum Focus: Much of our learning is rooted in making real-world connections. Throughout the year, classes will explore holidays, family traditions, rules at home and school, and the important roles people play in our families and community.
You can help reinforce these ideas by chatting with your child about what family means both at home and at school. Here are a few discussion starters to get you going:
- "How are your classroom and our home similar? How are they different?"
- "Who do you look up to as a role model at school? What about at home?"
- "What makes someone part of a family?"
Every family’s story is unique, and we embrace and celebrate each one. Thank you for being such a vital part of ours because, together at Sleepy Hollow, We Are Family!
Student ID Cards for Sleepy Hollow Bus Riders
We will be distributing bus student ID cards on Monday September 14th to kindergarten bus riders. The cards do not have photos at this time. Photos will be added after our Picture Day in October. Please remind your child to keep their student ID card either on their backpack or their lanyard.

AAP Referral Window for New Families

Fall Full-Time AAP Referral Window for Students New to FCPS Closes on October 15
The Advanced Academic Program (AAP) fall referral window is only for students in Grades 3 to 8 who are new to FCPS since January 1, 2026. Parents and guardians who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time AAP services must submit the Full-Time AAP Referral Form to Ms. Carmen Andersen, Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, at NCAndersen@fcps.edu by Thursday, October 15. Late referrals will not be accepted.
For students who are not new to FCPS, the spring Full-Time AAP identification window is open to students in Grades 2 to 7. Families interested in referring their student for consideration during the spring window must submit a referral by Tuesday, December 15.
Once a referral is received, our school will compile information related to the student. Then, a committee of trained professionals from across the county will review materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time AAP services.
Other Advanced Academic Services
At the elementary level, all students are screened each spring for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services. Families may also refer their student for consideration for Subject-Specific or Part-Time AAP at any time during the school year. Eligibility decisions are made at the school level, and families are notified of the decision within 30 school days of the referral. The Full-Time AAP referral deadlines do not apply.
At the middle school level, honors courses are open to all students.

El plazo para completar el formulario de referencia para el Programa Académico Avanzado (AAP) en el otoño, está disponible únicamente para estudiantes de 3.a 8. grado que son nuevos en FCPS desde el 1. de enero de 2026.
Los padres y tutores que deseen que su estudiante sea considerado para recibir servicios de AAP de Tiempo Completo deben enviar el formulario de referencia para AAP de Tiempo Completo a Sra. Carmen Andersen, maestra de recursos académicos avanzados, al correo electrónico NCAndersen@fcps.edu, a más tardar el jueves 15 de octubre. No se aceptarán formularios de referencias después de la fecha límite. All students will be released at 12:30 p.m. on the following four dates for the 2026 - 2027 school year in order to provide school staff with professional development opportunities.
