A Note from the Principal
Dear Daniels Run Families,
As we move through another busy September week, we also pause to recognize September 11. Twenty-five years later, we remember the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the first responders and everyday citizens who demonstrated extraordinary courage and compassion. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the importance of kindness, service, and caring for one another—values we work to nurture in our Dragons every day.
There are several exciting opportunities coming up for our families, so please take a moment to note these important dates.
Back to School Night & PTA Family Picnic – September 17
We are excited to welcome families to Daniels Run next Thursday! Back to School Night will be held from 5:00–6:00 p.m., giving families an opportunity to visit classrooms, hear from teachers, and learn more about what students will experience this year.
Our PTA Family Picnic will also take place that evening from 5:00–7:00 p.m. We hope you will stay and enjoy some time connecting with other Daniels Run families and celebrating our wonderful school community.
Family Lunch Visits Begin September 22
Starting September 22, parents and caregivers are welcome to join their child for lunch.
Fall Field Day – October 9
October will bring one of our favorite Daniels Run traditions—Fall Field Day! Mark your calendar for Friday, October 9. In addition to being a fun and memorable day for our students, Field Day is a great opportunity for families to get involved and volunteer at school. Details about volunteer opportunities will be shared soon.
Blenheim Boulevard Construction Update
Roadwork continues along Blenheim Boulevard as part of the City of Fairfax construction project. Work is generally taking place between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., which should minimize the impact on our normal arrival and dismissal routines.
Thank you for your continued partnership and for all you do to make Daniels Run such a caring and connected community. We look forward to seeing many of you at Back to School Night and the PTA Family Picnic next week!
Warm regards,
Susan Mullen, Principal

Advanced Academic Programs (AAP)
Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. A continuum of Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) services is available to students in Grades K to 12 and is designed to match services to each student’s unique academic needs.
Identification for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services occurs throughout the school year. Full-Time AAP services have two identification cycles:
-
Fall identification: Students in grades 3 to 7 who have enrolled in FCPS since January may be referred by October 15.
-
Spring identification: Any FCPS student in Grades 2 to 7 may be referred by December 15.
FCPS uses ability testing as one consideration in the holistic identification process for AAP services:
- All students in Grade 2 take the Naglieri General Ability Test (NGAT).
- Students in Grades 3 to 6 who do not have a multi-domain ability test score take the NGAT.
- Students in Grades 3 to 6 may retake an ability test one time. Families may request the ability test retake by contacting Ms.Gaby Auza, school testing coordinator, at GMAuza1@fcps.edu by September 30.
Families are invited to attend two AAP information meetings led by Ms. Danni James, our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART):
For more information, please contact Ms. Danni James, AART, at DFJamesfcps.edu or visit the FCPS Advanced Academic Programs webpage.

Girls on the Run Fall Season is Here!
Hi Daniels Run Families!
My name is Natalie Wilson and I am a first grade teacher here at DRES. I am so excited to be the Girls on the Run site liaison and head coach for the fall season. I can’t wait for the opportunity to get to know each of the girls and watch them grow through quality time together, setting collective goals, and building lifelong relationships. I am so excited to get to work with some of my past students and learn about all the awesome things they are doing now! We will practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school at 4:15-5:15pm. For questions about financial assistance, please email info@gotrnova.org or call 703-273-3153. Please let me know if you have any questions and I look forward to this season!
