Dear Waynewood Owls,
Today, our hearts and thoughts are especially tuned toward remembrance as we reflect on the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001. Living so close to Washington, D.C., our local community was deeply impacted by the tragic events of that day, and we hold a special place in our hearts for a former Waynewood family who lost a loving father in the Pentagon attack. Moments like these remind us of the preciousness of life, the strength of our community, and the beauty of supporting one another. To all the active-duty military members, veterans, and first responders within our Waynewood family: we offer our deepest gratitude for your selflessness, courage, and daily service to keep us safe. You embody the very best of us, and we are forever grateful. We will never forget.
Looking ahead, we have a week full of heart, spirit, and school pride. On Wednesday, September 16, we invite all staff and students to wear gold for a Spirit Day as we raise awareness for Childhood Cancer. This cause hits close to home, as several current and former Waynewood Owls have been impacted by childhood cancer. Wearing gold is a simple yet powerful way for our young learners to show empathy, build awareness, and send a resounding message of love and solidarity to these brave brave children and their families.
Keep those bright smiles ready because Friday, September 18 is Picture Day! Please help your child pick out their favorite outfit so we can capture their wonderful smiles!
Finally, our biggest PTA fundraiser of the year, the annual Jog-A-Thon, is officially underway! Our PTA does incredible work funding enrichment programs, classroom resources, and memorable community events for our students. This year, our goal is to raise $65,000 before the big event on September 25. There are fantastic opportunities for individual student and class prizes along the way, and if we hit our overall goal, the entire school will enjoy a well-deserved schoolwide celebration! You are welcome to join your children for lunch starting on Tuesday, September 22. Please remember to bring a picture ID so you can sign in at the office. We ask for your understanding that, due to the limited space in our cafeteria, only Waynewood students and their adult family members are permitted to join. To ensure our lunchroom remains a safe and manageable space for all of our students, please make arrangements for younger siblings at this time. We know how much it means to share a meal with your child, and we look forward to seeing you soon!

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. A continuum of Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services is available to students in Grades K-12 and is designed to match services to each student’s unique academic needs.
Identification for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services occurs throughout the school year. Full-Time AAP services have two identification cycles:

Fall identification: Students in grades 3-7 who have enrolled in FCPS since January may be referred by October 15, 2026.

Spring identification: Any FCPS student in Grades 2-7 may be referred by December 15, 2026.
FCPS uses ability testing as one consideration in the holistic identification process for AAP services.
- All students in Grade 2 take the Naglieri General Ability Tests (NGAT).
- Students in Grades 3-6 who do not have a multi-domain ability test score take the NGAT.
- Students in Grades 3-6 may retake an ability test one time. Families may request the ability test retake by contacting Alyssa Bonner, School Testing Coordinator, at arbonner@fcps.edu by September 30.
Families are invited to attend two AAP information meetings, led by Kathryn Adams, our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART):

AAP Continuum of Services: September 24 at 5:30pm in the cafeteria. Families will learn about the continuum of advanced academic services available to FCPS students.

Full-Time AAP Identification: October 1 at 5:30 in the cafeteria Families will learn about the referral and identification processes for Full-Time AAP services.

We’re excited to share information about Twice-Exceptional (2e) Programming available within our school system. Twice-exceptional students demonstrate advanced abilities while also experiencing learning, attention, or other challenges that may require additional support.

The FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) booklet explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. This year’s SR&R includes new Universal Grade Matrices, which are at-a-glance charts that make it easier for families to see behavior expectations and school responses for grades K-3, 4-8, and 9-12.
Families, please review the SR&R and discuss these expectations with your child. Be sure to sign the SR&R acknowledgement form by Wednesday, September 30, either by logging into SIS ParentVUE or signing and returning the Signature Sheet to your child’s school.

Cellphones and Personal Devices
Students may only use a personal device if it is required as part of a necessary accommodation in the students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan. A principal or the principal’s designee may approve a limited, course-specific exception for students enrolled in a specialized class when the curriculum requires a technology tool or software that isn’t available on a standard FCPS-issued device. Even though FCPS has launched a new bus navigation system, some aspects like the new FCPS My Ride mobile app are still in development. Families should still use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to track the location of their child’s bus. This app is still compatible with the new system.
FCPS will notify families and schools when the new app is ready to download and use. In the meantime, everyone should reinforce with students that they need to tap on and off the bus with their student ID cards.
Have you already downloaded the new app? That’s okay! The new app is in the final stage of testing, so some features are not yet fully functional. At this time, you should refer to Here Comes the Bus for the most accurate information.
From September 15 to October 15, FCPS recognizes and celebrates the histories and cultures of the members of our community who trace their heritage to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
