Hello MUES Families,
We hope that everyone enjoyed the Labor Day holiday weekend last week- the weather was beautiful! Now, we bid farewell to the unofficial end to summer. As we prepare to transition into the fall season in the coming weeks, much like spring, the weather can be completely different in the morning than the afternoon. Temperatures may cooler when our Mustangs are coming to school, but warm by the time we dismiss. We encourage our Mustangs to layer up by having a sweater or light jacket with them each day.
I also would like to take the opportunity to address pedestrian, bike, and vehicle safety in light of the unfortunate news Dr. Reid, Superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools, shared with our entire division on Wednesday evening.
It is imperative that we as adults model expected safety protocol for our children. When crossing roads, we should use a crosswalk and not run in between vehicles especially if they are moving. We should stay off of our electronic devices when operating a motor vehicle. We should ensure that we are wearing helmets when riding a bike, scooter, or other mode of transportation that requires a helmet to be worn. We should use sidewalks and designated walking paths when possible. We should always look left and right before crossing any road. We should always following the directions from the crossing guard or school staff.
Not only should we model this expected behavior on neighborhood and city streets, but on school grounds as well. We have over 1,100 children that are part of the McNair and McNair Upper school community. We want all of our Mustangs to make it to and from school safely. In order to guarantee this, we all need to do our part by following the traffic rules in our school's kiss and ride loops as well as on both Thomas Jefferson Drive and Fox Mill Road. It is my sincere hope that all of our parents/guardians and community members hope for the same and pledge to abide by the arrival and dismissal protocol that Ms. Watson and I have communicated to all McNair and McNair Upper families. Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our Mustang community safe!

Register now for the annual Special Education Family Conference: Connected Communities, Thriving Students. The free conference will take place on Saturday, November 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hayfield Secondary School.
Hosted by FCPS in collaboration with community partners, the conference highlights the power of partnerships in supporting student success. Families, educators, and community members are invited to connect, learn, and explore available special education services, supports, and resources.
The conference will feature an inspiring opening session, engaging breakout sessions, an exhibitor hall with local resources, and lunch for all participants.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. A continuum of Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services is available to students in Grades K-12 and is designed to match services to each student’s unique academic needs.
Identification for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services occurs throughout the school year. Full-Time AAP services have two identification cycles:

Fall identification: Students in grades 3-7 who have enrolled in FCPS since January may be referred by October 15, 2026.
-
Spring identification: Any FCPS student in Grades 2-7 may be referred by December 15, 2026.
FCPS uses ability testing as one consideration in the holistic identification process for AAP services.
- All students in Grade 2 take the Naglieri General Ability Test (NGAT).
- Students in Grades 3-6 who do not have a multi-domain ability test score take the NGAT.
- Students in Grades 3-6 may retake an ability test one time. Families may request the ability test retake by contacting Mrs. Janofsky, School Testing Coordinator, at mljanofsky@fcps.edu by September 30.
Families are invited to attend two AAP information meetings, led by Mrs. Janofsky and Mrs. Burg, the McNair Upper and McNair Primary Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AART):

AAP Continuum of Services: Tuesday September 29th at 5:30pm in McNair Elementary School Cafeteria (Primary). Families will learn about the continuum of advanced academic services available to FCPS students.

Full-Time AAP Identification: Tuesday October 20th at 5:30pm in the McNair Upper Elementary School Cafeteria. Families will learn about the referral and identification processes for Full-Time AAP services.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) believes in supporting social and emotional learning (SEL) for all students. In FCPS, students use a tool called the SEL Screener to think about their own SEL skills and experiences at school. McNair Upper Elementary School students in grades 3-6 will be participating in the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener in the Fall and Spring.
After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information about the SEL Screener, including information on opting out, please see the attached Parent Notification.
