Friends, I don’t recall a time when the human species faced as many threats to our continuing existence. I apologize for even bringing this up when many of us are having a hard enough time coping with Trump, but these threats require our understanding and activism. For the last several months I’ve been engaged in conversations with scientists, historians, and political observers about the nature and seriousness of such threats. Not surprisingly, they hold different views. But I’ve been struck by how much agreement there is about the threats themselves. If we had sane and responsible governments in Washington and elsewhere, they would be making every effort to reduce these risks. Obviously we don’t. In fact, Trump is making all of the threats far worse. Yet beginning in January, some sanity and responsibility may return to the legislative branch of our own government — in which case, today’s Office Hours discussion will be relevant. It’s also relevant to what today’s candidates for the House of Representatives and the Senate are talking to their constituents about — or should be. So let me list below the four existential threats I’m repeatedly told pose the biggest dangers to humanity.
