Carl Sandburg, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Lead Belly & One Legendary Banjo

09/23/2026 09:00 AM EDT

In 1939, Frank Warner, a musician and folksong collector, showed up at a party in New York's Greenwich Village with a handmade banjo made from hickory wood in the mountains of North Carolina. At the party, he got the famed poet Carl Sandburg to sign it, then over years got some 260 other famed folk musicians to sign it, including legendary names such as Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Lead Belly and Burl Ives. Today, it's beautifully preserved in the Library's American Folklife Center.
