A Message from the Administrative Team

Dear Ravensworth Family,

We had quite a range of weather this week, and it’s beginning to feel like autumn just in time for October!  Students are continuing to work hard on their beginning of the year assessments.  These measures inform teachers to support your child’s learning throughout the year.  Please keep a careful eye on communication from your child’s teacher to schedule a 1st quarter parent/teacher conference.

We started out this week with our Advanced Academics Parent Information Session with Mrs. Trumbull. This provided valuable information about the process for AAP selection and the different delivery models in the county. Tuesday our students enjoyed the assembly “Drawing My Destiny” with cartoonist Duane Abel.  During the assembly, we learned about goal setting and the importance of preparing for success by studying and preparing for the future now. Thank you to our PTA for sponsoring this very engaging and fun event. Wednesday, Ravensworth welcomed our new students with a Blue Star Welcome in cafeteria.  Students were able to connect with other new students and enjoy a donut together before heading up to class. Friday our sixth graders are heading to Hemlock for building teamwork and collaboration skills while completing a ropes course.

Partnering with you to keep our school community safe and thriving is always our top priority. Everyday attendance plays such a vital role in your child's confidence and success, and seeing our students arrive on time each morning ready to learn makes all the difference!

Thank you for your ongoing partnership and dedication to making Ravensworth ES such a wonderful place to learn and grow.

Sincerely,

Shannon Mueck and Amy Heiman

Safe Routes to School Parent and Caregiver Survey

anual notice of survey

As part of the Fairfax County School Board’s Annual School-Based Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Assessment, the FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are inviting parents and caregivers to share their experiences traveling to and from school.

The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss and ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.

Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.

Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.

Understanding the FCPS Calendar

attendance matters 2

Help your child prepare for future success by encouraging them to develop positive attendance habits. Regular attendance supports learning and helps students stay on track for college, careers, and other opportunities after graduation.

Take a look at the FCPS Calendar. Try your best to schedule any vacations or planned family events on weekends and school holidays. If the appointment needs to be during the school day, when possible, schedule it for the beginning or end of the day to minimize time missed.

If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or appointment, please report the absence to the school as early as possible. Find links to your school’s attendance email or notification system on their homepage, or call the front office.

If you or your family need any kind of support, please reach out to your school. We are here for you! Visit the FCPS Attendance webpage for tips and strategies.

  • The free Lightspeed Parent Portal makes it easy for you to see and manage how your child uses their FCPS-issued device outside of school hours. New Lightspeed Parent Portal features for this school year include:
  • Schedules: Pause or restrict internet access during specific times, such as during homework time, family dinners, weekends, or bedtime.
  • Web Rules: Block specific websites you don’t want your child accessing at home.

Be sure to check your email (subject line: “Filter Portal Weekly Report”) each Sunday for the Lightspeed Student Online Activity Report, a weekly summary of the websites your child has visited. Learn more about Lightspeed Parent Reports.

Shorter Days Ahead: Stay Alert, Stay Visible

shorter

Fall is here, bringing cooler temperatures, changing leaves, and shorter days. As daylight hours decrease, many morning and evening commutes will take place in lower-light conditions.

The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) is reminding drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists that reduced visibility can make it harder to see and be seen on our roadways. Read the FCPD blog on seasonal safety.
