Reality Check
Publishers and authors are praising a Third Circuit court ruling that found unauthorized copying by an AI company was not protected by fair use in a case brought by Thomas Reuters, the first such decision by a federal appeals judge. W.W. Norton is continuing to expand its footprint in children’s publishing with Norton Waverly, a new imprint helmed by former Walker Books managing director Karen Lotz. Two children’s authors with books featuring Palestinians have sued the city of Los Angeles for discrimination after having a speaking event canceled by the public library in December. In other news, Yesteryear author Caro Claire Burke is sponsoring free tickets to Naza, an award-winning documentary about Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, during the film’s opening week in New York. Book Riot is kicking off a series recapping the biggest controversies in the publishing world from the last 15 years. Writer Monica Corcoran Harel discusses the joys and challenges of audiobook narration in Alta. Rap artist Megan Thee Stallion told Marie Claire that she’s a BookTok fan and wants to do something to engage other readers. Neon has dropped the trailer for Clarissa, directors Arie and Chuko Esiri’s film adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway. And Samantha Joseph's Center for Fiction’s First Novel Prize–shortlisted Carrying will be adapted for film by Tommy Dorfman’s production house.
