Principal Message

Dear Lorton Station Families,

This week, we are excited to announce that on Thursday, October 8th, we will be a part of the Arm and Hammer ROCKET DAY Challenge! All classes in grades 3-6 will spend time during science designing, building, and preparing their rockets for launch next week. We will record all the launches and have them posted on our website and Instagram accounts for our community to watch again and again.

Lorton Station has launched our SHOW UP AND SHINE Attendance Challenge with a special emphasis on our Attendance Spirit Week. Strong attendance is vital to every student's academic and emotional well-being. When a child misses 10% or more of school each year, it significantly affects their ability to develop as a reader, build critical thinking skills, become a writer, and understand complex math concepts. We want to partner with our families to join our SHOW UP AND SHINE Challenge to ensure your child maintains a 90% or higher attendance every month.

Attendance is a vital life skill that will benefit your child later in life. It’s a good habit to build now to help them graduate from college on time and routinely report to work on time once they have a career.

Please review the FCPS Calendar. Try to schedule any trips or family events on weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning counts toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students who are absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered “chronically absent.”

When possible, schedule appointments outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or appointment, you must report the absence to our school. Please call the main office at 571-642-6000.

Have a Great Day,

Dr. Legagneur, Ms. Champion, Mr. Barton

This year, each Principal Coffee will focus on a specific school topic to give families greater insight into Lorton Station. We invite all Lorton Station families to join us in person for this year’s Principal Coffees, held on select dates from 6:00 to 7:00 pm throughout the 2026-2027 school year. Our first session will cover Title I and the State of the Union for Lorton Station. We will share results from the spring 2026 SOLs and our SIIP Plan for the 2026 - 2027 school year. The meeting will be on October 6 in the Library. We hope to see you there!

Calendar Change: Eid al-Fitr

FCPS will mark the beginning of Eid al-Fitr with an evening-only observance day on Monday, March 8. There will be school on this day, but major school-sponsored events and activities (such as auditions or tryouts) will not take place.

Tuesday, March 9, will be a holiday for students and staff.

Wednesday, March 10, will be an observance day. There will be school on this day, but certain activities that cannot be made up (major tests, field trips, or mandatory events) will not take place on this day.

A new school year calendar has been published, which includes this change. Please note that holidays and observances on the calendar may shift due to anticipated lunar sightings.

Safe Routes to School Parent and Caregiver Survey

As part of the Fairfax County School Board’s Annual School-Based Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Assessment, the FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are inviting parents and caregivers to share their experiences traveling to and from school.

The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss and ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.

Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.

Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.
