Free tuition policies are proving to be a highly effective marketing tool for colleges, according to a paper from Brookings Institution senior fellow Phillip Levine. The policies primarily benefit students just below the income threshold, and Levine notes that they have been more important since the Supreme Court's decision on affirmative action.

Ark. launches unified college application portal
Arkansas has launched the ACCESS portal, allowing high school seniors to apply to multiple colleges and universities through a single form, with the first five applications free. The portal, mandated by the ACCESS Act of 2025, automatically populates transcripts and test scores, and nearly all public institutions and half of private ones are participating.

College tuition drops as public fixates on sticker prices

Despite widespread concern in the US about rising college costs, the average net tuition has actually declined in recent years. Data from the College Board show that net tuition and fees at in-state public universities now average around $2,500 per year, a figure that has steadily fallen. This trend is attributed to factors such as increased public funding, greater price competition among colleges and heightened student awareness about debt.
