Dear Hayfield Families,
Our school-wide Morning Meeting gives students and staff a chance to come together as one community and practice the skills students are learning in their classrooms: making safe choices, showing kindness, listening, and encouraging one another.
Yesterday, students nominated classmates they had noticed making great choices. One student also complimented our kindergarteners on doing a great job coming into the gym. Those thoughtful words showed how students are learning to notice and celebrate one another’s efforts.
Students shared what makes Morning Meeting meaningful to them. One said she loves getting to see students from across the school. Another shared that she enjoys learning sign language. We’re glad these gatherings help students connect with one another and learn new ways to communicate, including through American Sign Language.
Morning Meeting also gives students opportunities to lead by speaking and performing in front of the school, celebrate accomplishments, and share messages about kindness and safety. We’re proud of how confidently students are taking on these roles.
We’re also proud of how much students have learned about gathering safely and efficiently. Last year, it could take about 20 minutes to get everyone into the gym for an assembly. This year, students have mastered the routine and are getting settled in less than six minutes—a wonderful example of cooperation and responsibility.
Thank you for partnering with us as we help every student feel connected, celebrated, and ready to learn.
Warmly,
Dr. Megan Tempel-Milner and Mr. Seamus O’Connor

FCPS will continue with limited early release Wednesdays for elementary schools during the 2026-27 school year, however the number has been reduced from eight to four days.
Early release Wednesdays provide elementary teachers with a dedicated block of time to prepare lessons, participate in professional development and training, and collaborate with peers. A well-supported and continuously improving teaching staff leads to better educational outcomes for students.
Here are the early release dates for Hayfield Elementary School. Students will be dismissed at 12:20 p.m. on the following days:
-
October 21
-
December 2
-
February 10
-
May 5
Please fill out Hayfield's Early Release Wednesday Dismissal Plan form so we can ensure your child is dismissed correctly on these days. You must submit the form by Oct. 19 if you wish for your child to stay at school for supervision on Oct. 21.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. A continuum of Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services is available to students in Grades K-12 and is designed to match services to each student’s unique academic needs.
Identification for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services occurs throughout the school year. Full-Time AAP services have two identification cycles:
-
Fall identification: Students in grades 3-7 who have enrolled in FCPS since January may be referred by October 15, 2026.
-
Spring identification: Any FCPS student in Grades 2-7 may be referred by December 15, 2026.
FCPS uses ability testing as one consideration in the holistic identification process for AAP services.
- All students in Grade 2 take the Naglieri General Ability Tests (NGAT).
- Students in Grades 3-6 who do not have a multi-domain ability test score take the NGAT.
Hayfield Elementary School Families, are invited to attend an AAP information meeting, led by Avery Rothman, our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART):
-
AAP Continuum of Services AND Full-Time AAP Identification: These information meetings will be combined into one and held virtually on Friday, October 9 at 9am. If you are unable to make it, or have additional questions after the meeting, slots for office hours with Avery Rothman will be made available. The recorded video will also be posted on our Hayfield ES website. Meeting link: https://myfcpsk12.zoom.us/j/97906400518
