Principal's Message

Hello, Scottie families!

Thank you to our PTO for organizing such a great outdoor movie night last week!  It was perfect weather for the first PTO community event of the year.

This morning we had a great turnout and enjoyed connecting with parents and caregivers at our October parent coffee.  Thank you to Ms. Sorenson and Ms. Hovey for sharing about the FCPS AAP overview of services and identification process for full-time services.

Renovation work continues at Bonnie Brae, with the recent removal of the trailers and the demolition of the old blacktop behind the school.  Work has already begun on installing the new blacktop and playground, which should be completed and ready for use later this school year.   Click here to visit the capital improvement website for more information (including timelines, project highlights, and renderings) on Bonnie Brae's renovation as it nears completion.

Have a wonderful weekend with your family and friends.

blue star welcome week

Our Purple Star School Celebrates Blue Star Welcome Week!

Bonnie Brae is proud to be a Purple Star School, honoring and supporting our military-connected students, staff, and families.

From September 26 – October 6, 2026, we join schools nationwide in celebrating Blue Star Welcome Week, a time to warmly welcome military-connected families and staff, especially those who may have recently joined our community.

Here’s how we’re celebrating:

  • Military-kids activity, schoolwide news announcements, and our weekly newsletter features.
  • Invitations for military families to connect with after-school programs, volunteer opportunities, and PTO events.
  • A warm welcome at upcoming school-wide gatherings, e.g. Movie Night, Fall Festival et al—please say hello and share a smile!

To all our military families: Thank you for your service and sacrifices. We are honored to have you as part of the Bonnie Brae family.

Early Release Wednesday

Early Release Wednesdays - Complete the Form

Parents and caregivers, please be sure to complete the Early Release Wednesday form your child's teacher shared with you (and also located here) so we are aware how your child/children will go home on Early Release Wednesdays. Please complete the form for each child who attends Bonnie Brae by Friday, October 16.

Our first Early Release Wednesday is October 21.  Students will be released three hours early at 12:15 PM.

As a reminder, if you complete the form and share that your student will need to stay at Bonnie Brae due to childcare needs on our Early Release Wednesday, they will be dismissed at the regular time of 3:15 PM.

For a list of all Early Release Wednesday dates and more information, be sure to check out the FCPS website.

All preschool classes will follow their normal schedule.

Challenge Materials Review Committee

As detailed in Regulation 3009, principals are required to submit a list of individuals who are available to serve on a Challenged Materials Review Committee if a departmental committee is needed.  Names of two parents/guardians are required. Parents/guardians must not be employed by FCPS and contact information should be provided.

The list of potential committee members will be maintained at central office.  Names are randomly chosen to serve if a central departmental committee is required to review a challenged material.

If you would like to submit your name as a parent volunteer for Bonnie Brae, please fill out this form.  Thank you!

Calendar Change: Eid al-Fitr

FCPS will mark the beginning of Eid al-Fitr with an evening-only observance day on Monday, March 8. There will be school on this day, but major school-sponsored events and activities (such as auditions or tryouts) will not take place.

Tuesday, March 9, will be a holiday for students and staff.

Wednesday, March 10, will be an observance day. There will be school on this day, but certain activities that cannot be made up (major tests, field trips, or mandatory events) will not take place on this day.

A new school year calendar has been published, which includes this change. Please note that holidays and observances on the calendar may shift due to anticipated lunar sightings.

Safe Routes to School Parent and Caregiver Survey

As part of the Fairfax County School Board’s Annual School-Based Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Assessment, the FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are inviting parents and caregivers to share their experiences traveling to and from school.

The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss and ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.

Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.

Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.

FCPS Seeks Community Input on Middle School AAP Centers

FCPS is exploring a plan to offer Full-Time Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services at every middle school. Under the proposal, students who qualify could attend their neighborhood middle school and take advanced classes with other AAP students. The School Board has approved community engagement at Franklin, Hayfield, Holmes, Key, and Whitman middle schools, where programs could open for the 2027-28 school year. The proposal is still under consideration, and the School Board is expected to make a decision in December.

Each community meeting offers in-person and virtual participation. Upcoming meetings are scheduled for:

  • Franklin Middle: Monday, October 5, at 6 p.m.
  • Holmes Middle: Thursday, October 15, at 6 p.m.
  • Whitman Middle: Thursday, October 22, at 6 p.m.

Current middle school students will remain at their assigned AAP centers through middle school. Learn more and find meeting sign-up forms on the Middle School AAP Centers page.
