Principal's Message
Hello Bruin Nation! Welcome to October! It is hard to believe we are already closing in on the end of the first quarter, but this month is packed with major milestones and exciting events.
Today was Custodian Appreciation Day and I can guarantee that Bruin Nation has the best custodians. From the first moment the doors are open before 5:30 am to the last lock-up at midnight, each and every one of our custodians gives their best to making sure the building is clean and ready for use. We are so very grateful for their hard work.
Next week begins with PSAT/SAT Day on Wednesday, October 7, which is a 2-hour early release day. Buses will depart at 12:45 pm following a grab-and-go lunch; please check below for specific student testing locations. The following week brings Homecoming Week (October 12–16), kicking off with a School Planning Day (no school for students) on Monday, October 12. We will round out the week with our High School Pep Rally on Friday, October 16, followed by the neighborhood Homecoming Parade, Dedication of Bears, Bite of Braddock, Homecoming Football game and dance. With the Pep Rally, our bell schedule will be flipped. If you plan to pick up your child during that final block, please notify your subschool early for a pass.
Finally, we will wrap up the month and the first quarter with another 2-hour early release on October 30. Thank you for your continued support as we navigate a busy, fun-filled month together!
Have a great weekend!
Lindsey Kearns

Buses Arriving Late
In response to concerns we have heard from Bruin families, we have set up communication with our teachers if buses are arriving late in the morning. Students who ride a bus that arrives at 7:55 or later will be marked as Excused-Tardy for that day. If your student is marked as Unexcused Tardy, please reach out to their subschool.
Final PSAT/SAT Reminder
Friendly reminder!! PSAT/SAT School Day is coming on October 7. This will be an early release schedule for 7th and 8th grade students, 9th grade does not attend school, 10th and 11th are scheduled for the PSAT and registered 12th grade students take the SAT. Please make every effort to not schedule appointments while students may be testing. An eNotify message was sent earlier this week with all the details.

FCPS will mark the beginning of Eid al-Fitr with an evening-only observance day on Monday, March 8. There will be school on this day, but major school-sponsored events and activities (such as auditions or tryouts) will not take place.
Tuesday, March 9, will be a holiday for students and staff.
Wednesday, March 10, will be an observance day. There will be school on this day, but certain activities that cannot be made up (major tests, field trips, or mandatory events) will not take place on this day.
A new school year calendar has been published, which includes this change. Please note that holidays and observances on the calendar may shift due to anticipated lunar sightings.
Safe Routes to School Parent and Caregiver Survey
As part of the Fairfax County School Board’s Annual School-Based Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Assessment, the FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are inviting parents and caregivers to share their experiences traveling to and from school.
The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss and ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.
Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.
Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.

Vision and Hearing Screening
Vision and hearing screening will be held on the following dates for 10th graders during PE classes:
- 10th grade: October 5 and 6
If your child wears glasses, please be sure that glasses are at school on screening day.
The purpose of screening is to identify students who need further evaluation due to difficulty seeing the screening chart or hearing the screening tones. Parents will be notified by letter if screening results indicate that further evaluation is needed. Prompt follow-up with your health care provider is recommended as vision and hearing difficulties can interfere with learning.
Cell Phone Policy
Due to a new VA law passed earlier this year, FCPS has implemented a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy across all grade levels. This means no cell phones, cell phone accessories, and smart devices (including AirPods, earbuds, headsets, and smart glasses) must be turned off and personally stored in a backpack or locker away by all students for the entire school day.
If you need to reach your student for any reason during the school day, please call their subschool and they will relay a message for you.
