Based on our testing, splurging on a fancy filtered showerhead probably isn’t worth it. We recommend the $30 weAqua Heavy Duty No BS Shower Filter, which removes chlorine and heavy metals.
But do you need one at all? That depends.
|
The water that comes out of your showerhead may contain elements like chlorine, magnesium, and calcium that can dry out skin and hair and exacerbate conditions like eczema. Showerhead filters claim to remedy this by removing these potential irritants from your shower water.
While we’ve found that they can significantly reduce chlorine from your water, none of these filters actually remove magnesium and calcium (the common culprits behind “hard water”). You need to install a home water softener or a reverse osmosis system in order to do that.
Before buying a filter, we suggest using a home water test kit. Our testers with the lowest water quality saw the greatest benefits from the filters, while those with higher-quality water didn’t notice much of a difference.
What other benefits did our testers find? Read our full review below.
