In his victory speech, the leader of Parti Québécois pledged to push for independence from Canada. "Our national destiny will be achieved one day," declared Paul St-Pierre Plamondon who is set to become the province's leader after a projected minority win on Monday. This "could prove to be a test for Prime Minister Mark Carney", writes Canada digital editor Jessica Murphy, particularly on issues like immigration and the monarchy. "Carney may find himself managing dual unity crises in different parts of the country,” Jessica writes, with Alberta holding a vote on whether to have an independence referendum later this month. What's more, St-Pierre Plamondon’s pledge to "abolish the monarchy" would "put future Quebec laws in doubt", she says.
