Dear Travel Fan, There’s a certain kind of travel story you might only read in The Times — something that’s maybe erudite (or nerdy, if you prefer), that goes somewhere off the beaten path and engages with history. A perfect example is this week’s article about hiking the Polish-Czech Friendship Trail, where during the Cold War, dissidents from the two countries met surreptitiously. I think you’ll enjoy it. We’ve also got a treasure hunt through Tuscany in search of the masterpieces of the Renaissance painter Piero della Francesca; Daniel Boulud’s 5 Favorite Places in his hometown, Lyon, France; and a roundup of horror movie locations you can visit during this spooky season. Our 36 Hours column visits Tunis, an ancient city that seems to have an exciting modern surprise around every corner. In August, when we published a list of great U.S. bike rides under 25 miles, the comments section was flooded with suggestions for additional rides from readers. They were so good, we’ve pulled them together into a new list. In the news, a new lawsuit argues that Expedia violates federal antitrust laws by enforcing contracts that prevent hotels from offering lower rates via their own websites, loyalty portals or call centers, meaning that consumers have to pay more. And a woman who jumped off a cruise ship in Greece was rescued after 20 hours in the water. For many airline passengers, planes are fairly indistinguishable, but for aficionados, some stand out. The Airbus A340-600, known as the A346, was one of the latter, with four engines, an extra-long fuselage and, in some configurations, bathrooms down a flight of stairs. Now, Lufthansa, the last major carrier flying the plane, is retiring it. Fans told us why they’ll miss it. Wishing you safe and happy travels,
