The NOAA Marine Debris Program holds an annual art contest to reach K-8 students and help raise awareness about marine debris. Students in kindergarten through eighth grade from the United States and U.S. territories can submit artwork that answers the questions:
- How does marine debris impact the ocean and Great Lakes?
- What are you doing to help prevent marine debris?

Featuring diverse perspectives, the series includes local cultural practitioners alongside NOAA representatives, all of whom share insights into the history, cultural significance, and reverence for our ocean. By focusing on sanctuary protections and cultural practices, the series aims to foster a deeper understanding in how we navigate the interconnectedness of community and ocean stewardship.

Join Artist Boat for FREE Programming
National Academies Gulf Research Program Awards allow Artist Boat to serve 50 Middle School Teachers and their Classes.
This place based and phenomena driven curriculum will engage students, 6th to 8th grade, in their inquiry-based nature as they learn about climate, land use, and native species through field investigations and hands-on discoveries.
Artist Boat will provide paid professional development to 50 teachers and key staff who will co-facilitate the transformative program through focus on student-led decision making, questions for investigations, and design thinking to determine actions. By participating over two years, teachers will be confident in leading decision thinking lessons in the future.

The Research Ecologist, you will perform the following duties:
- Perform the full spectrum of research activities.
- Utilize comprehensive knowledge of conservation biology, marine ecology, natural resources, and environmental sciences to synthesize complex scientific information into a variety of scientific publications and public outreach materials.
- Build partnerships with external organizations to further a sanctuary site's science needs and priorities.
- Coordinate with other sanctuaries to expand research efforts, and efficiently utilize and share resources within the NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries.
- Provide expert advice and recommendations to novel, complex, and controversial issues.
