Black Friday is almost here, and that means a deluge of sales is coming. We asked our resident Black Friday expert, NBC Select reporter Zoe Malin, what big mistakes to avoid while deal-hunting. She’s been covering Black Friday and other sales events for six years and dropped these nuggets of wisdom: |
- “Going into Black Friday without a list is a huge mistake. You need to know what you’re looking for,” says Malin. “Divide your list into levels of need. I like ‘cannot wait,’ ‘great to get’ and ‘wish list,’ and I prioritize whatever budget I have left based on these.”

Compare prices across retailers, but not just dollars off, says Malin. “Some sites might have less expensive or free shipping, especially if you’re buying multiple items. Or you might find a better offer connected to a loyalty program, like an exclusive discount if you’re a Target Circle 360 member, for example,” she says.

People buy the wrong products at the wrong time. “It hurts my heart when I see people buy enormous TVs on Memorial Day — you can get a better deal on Black Friday or Cyber Monday.” For Black Friday, “it's a time for gifting, so anything that makes a great present, like small kitchen appliances, tech, apparel or makeup, make sure to pick those up,” she says, because you’ll probably be getting the best deal. “Many brands save their biggest discounts of the year for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, so expect over 25% off or so.”
