Mobile broadband base dips after two years amid Reliance Jio user losses

Reliance Jio's heavy 4G and 5G user losses following recent tariff hikes triggered a sharp fall in India's mobile broadband user base in September - the first decline after two years of steady growth since the launch of 5G services in October 2022.

"The sector's wireless broadband subscriber (4G/5G) base, led by Jio, fell sharply in September, suggesting higher price elasticity among its (read: Jio's) customers," Jefferies said in a research note seen by ET. ( READ MORE)

Private telcos' subscriber losses continue in Sept, BSNL only gainer

At the end of September, the wireless user base of Jio declined to 463.78 million as compared to 471.74 million in August. Similarly, Airtel’s user base decreased to 383.48 million as compared to 384.91 million in August and Vodafone Idea’s base was down to 212.45 million as compared to 214 million in August.

In contrast, BSNL’s wireless base rose to 91.89 million as compared to 91.04 million in August. ( READ MORE)

Reliance Jio working with all device OEMs, Qualcomm for ‘value proposition’ on 5G phones: Sunil Dutt

Dutt said Jio is working “very closely” with all the device OEMs to get the “best value proposition for our customers”.

Mukesh Ambani’s Jio leads the wireless market with a subscriber base of 463.78 million, followed by Bharti Airtel (383.48 million), and Vodafone Idea (212.45 million), according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) data for August. The Mumbai-based telco has 148 million 5G users that contribute nearly 34% to its wireless data traffic. ( READ MORE)
