Last edition, we were talking about short-story collections, and how the field for writers is changing. Here’s some of what you all had to say.
Jaymie D. writes “I doubt it's been possible to support oneself primarily as a short story writer for a decade or two. But short fiction doesn't appear to be dying. It's not on life support. Not counting bound magazines, short fiction can be found on assorted online magazines. Clarkesworld, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Uncanny, Strange Horizons, Lightspeed, Nightmare, Apex and Fiyah come immediately to mind. Tor publishes short fiction occasionally on their Reactor site. Escape Pod, Podcastle, Pseudopod and Cast of Wonders are short fiction podcasts all in the Escape Artists family of podcasts. I'm sure there are other, non-genre examples.”
Helen J. writes “I’ve been a reader all my life and have read about the demise of the short story since I first began to read on my own. Why did it fall out of favor?... Visiting the library as I do multiple times in a week I wonder about the myriad of authors with multiple books on the shelves that I’ve greatly enjoyed. Where are they today and did they begin writing with a short story?”
That’s it for today. See you Tuesday!
