“Young men and boys tend to externalize, they act out, whereas women tend to be more internalizing, so it’s more about feelings of sadness. But if you take the main measures of mental health, they only ask internalizing questions. There’s a lot of attention right now to the share of young women that are feeling persistent sadness, but they don’t ask ‘Did you punch a wall?’ There’s a tendency sometimes to see that as antisocial behavior, but they’re symptoms of the same problem.”
