Mother Jones Reader, The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) is one of the most pristine and ecologically important places on Earth. Yet, oil companies are being invited to bid on leases for drilling in this untouched wilderness. President Biden, required by existing law, has scheduled an early January lease sale, and with Donald Trump set to take office, even more sales are likely to follow. But just because land in ANWR is available for drilling doesn’t mean oil companies should bid on it—or plan to drill. Doing so would be a catastrophic mistake. The environmental and climate implications of oil drilling in ANWR are undeniable. This fragile habitat is home to polar bears, caribou, and migratory birds. Drilling would destroy ecosystems, threaten wildlife, and pollute this irreplaceable landscape. Tell oil companies: No drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Click here to add your name. The climate stakes are equally dire. Scientists warn that we must keep fossil fuels in the ground to limit global warming to 1.5°C. Drilling in ANWR would only deepen our dependence on oil and worsen the climate crisis, putting communities and future generations at risk. Most Americans oppose drilling in the Arctic Refuge, and oil companies have a choice to make. They can stand on the right side of history and prioritize the planet, or they can pursue short-term profits at the expense of our environment and future. We call on oil companies to reject any bids for drilling in ANWR and pledge to leave this irreplaceable wilderness untouched. Protecting the Arctic Refuge is not just an environmental imperative—it’s a moral one. Thanks for everything you do. Civic Shout |
