I have some experience here. I began editing Trump coverage in the summer of 2015, including a particularly grueling stretch in 2016 when I was tasked with factchecking every word out of the man’s mouth. (I was younger then — and I certainly looked younger then.)
What I’ve learned in that time is the value of patience — specifically, that the rush to be first to report what Trump does or says robs one of perspective.
The other lesson I’ve learned from my decade of Trump editing is that it’s all too easy to let him dominate your every mental moment — to allow your thoughts to be organized around him, to filter every news item through a pro- or anti-Trump lens. It’s been too many years of Trump, and there are too many more to go, to keep living this way.
And that’s why we’re calling this newsletter “The Logoff.” In addition to helping you manage the torrent of Trump news, we will close every edition with something — a video, a podcast, a story — that will help you refocus your thoughts away from Trump, and into a more productive headspace, as you log off for the day.
Finally, this newsletter is for you, so let me know if you’re getting what you need from it. I’m at patrick.reis@vox.com, and I’d love to hear from you.
