Good morning, I'm Lincoln Archer from the ABC News website. This morning we're bringing you all the latest from Donald Trump's inauguration and his first day in office. There's also the latest from the Gaza ceasefire, a look at TikTok's future and the lowdown on the heatwave coming right at us from today. Then, if you're up for it, we'll go on a relaxing, 30,000km stroll...

Here's the latest on the inauguration
|
What's the story: Donald Trump is back as the 47th President of the United States. Mr Trump and his Vice-President JD Vance were sworn in at a ceremony at the Capitol early this morning. 'The golden age of America begins right now': That was the opening line of Trump's second inaugural speech. He went on to promise a crackdown on immigration, especially at the US-Mexico border, plus moves on
taxes and tariffs and a mission to "
plant the stars and stripes on the planet Mars". Now come the executive orders. Trump had foreshadowed a flurry of these on his first afternoon back in the Oval Office. Our US bureau chief Jade Macmillan and correspondent Carrington Clarke have broken down what to expect in the coming hours ▶️. Biden's last move: The outgoing president's final act in office was to
issue more pardons
, including for his family and Dr Anthony Fauci. He also pardoned members of the January 6 committee, which investigated the insurrection four years ago at the site of today's ceremony.

The latest on the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas
|
- Gaza rubble: The second day of the ceasefire has allowed searching to resume for an estimated 10,000 people buried in the remnants of destroyed buildings. More than 600 aid trucks have entered Gaza since the truce began;
- Hostage certificates: You might have seen pictures of the released hostages with certificates being held up beside them. These were part of farewell "gift bags" from Hamas —
we've translated what they say;
- Netanyahu's future: The ceasefire deal came alongside resignations from within the Israeli PM's cabinet. But in this interview from The World, we see why Benjamin Netanyahu's leadership is safe ▶️;
- Palestinians freed: The ABC was with the family of activist Hadeel Hijaz, held without charge since June, who was released along with dozens of other prisoners as part of the deal. Moments before their reunion, they were still sceptical it would actually happen.

Here's what else has been happening
|
- TikTok's gamble: The app has risked financial ruin by coming back online despite a ban, even with assurances from Donald Trump. Our technology reporter notes the clock is now ticking for another showdown;
- Childcare fire: A centre in Sydney's south-east has been set alight and
painted with anti-Semitic graffiti overnight. Anthony Albanese has condemned the incident as an "evil hate crime".
- Summer scorcher:
The BoM’s forecasts show nearly half the country in some sort of heatwave from today until Saturday. This story reveals how a cyclone named Sean is partly to blame;
- A $10 coffee?: We’re also being warned to brace for coffee prices even more punishing than the rising temperature. To survive, we might need to develop a taste for spicier beans…or those usually reserved for (ugh) instant.

Quote of the Day
|
| "We will stand bravely. We will live proudly. We will dream boldly. And nothing will stand in our way because we are Americans. The future is ours." | |
— That's Donald Trump finishing off his inaugural speech this morning. The rousing finish did little to impress our global affairs editor John Lyons, who called it one of the "least visionary" speeches of its kind. See his take ▶️.

One more thing … time for some fresh air
|
If you thought keeping up to date with world politics was gruelling, wait until you hear about Lucy Barnard. She's been named our Adventurer of the Year for her 30,000km journey — by foot, mind you — across the Americas. The story is full of incredible pictures and amazing anecdotes, but here's the part no-one tells you: when you hear noises at night and there is not another human being for miles, "you get out of the tent with your torch and you're trying to spot green eyes".

That's it for now. Thanks for reading, and we'll be back at the same time tomorrow. Lincoln and the ABC News Digital team.
