Just hours after being sworn into office, Donald Trump has signed a series of sweeping executive orders to set the tone for his second US presidency. He's
granted pardons to almost 1,600 people in connection with the Capitol riots of four years ago. He also began a crackdown on immigration and declared a national emergency on the US-Mexico border,
pulled America out of the Paris climate agreement and began the process to
withdraw from the World Health Organization. Trump earlier promised in his inaugural speech that "the golden age of America begins right now". In his analysis, our North America correspondent Anthony Zurcher says the address was
a mix of promises and contradictions that underlined some of the challenges Trump faces upon his return.

Starmer to make statement on Southport public inquiry
|
|
Prime Minister Keir Starmer is to give a statement from Downing Street this morning on the government's decision to hold a public inquiry into the failings that led to the murders of three girls in Southport. The authorities were aware of Axel Rudakubana's obsession with violence before he carried out the attack last summer but he was not stopped. Starmer says there are "grave questions to answer" about what went wrong.
