Dear Mother Jones Reader,
This moment marks a turning point in our nation’s history. The second Trump Administration has officially begun, ushering in what we expect to be an aggressive and unrelenting assault on the separation of church and state. As Trump and his Shadow Network of Christian Nationalist allies rewrite the rules to impose their narrow religious agenda, Americans United is spearheading the opposition with resolve and determination. Our fight has never been more crucial. That’s why today is the official launch of our Freedom Without Favor Fund – an urgent 4-year, $5 million initiative to fortify our work in the courts, legislatures, and communities across the country.
Extraordinary moments demand extraordinary action. We are lawyering up, staffing up, and leveling up Americans United with the tools, resources, and resilience necessary to defend the rights of every American and protect the fundamental promise of religious freedom without favor and equality without exception. Make no mistake – their overreach is our opportunity for progress.
We are mobilizing like never before. Here’s what you can expect from us in the coming weeks: |
- Suing Christian Nationalists in Court
Expect to see AU in court. We’ve got more lawyers on staff than ever before, and we are ready to fight with every legal tool at our disposal to defend true religious freedom and the separation of church and state from Christian Nationalism. We’re expecting hundreds of new rules and executive orders and our lawyers will be reviewing them all in conjunction with our allies.
- Week of Action Against the Nationwide Vouchers
Congress is expected to move quickly to try to enact the first-ever national private school voucher program – which would funnel public dollars into private, religious schools. This is a direct assault on public education and religious freedom. Our teams are preparing to mobilize opposition and fight this dangerous proposal. Stay tuned for actions you can take to support public schools in the coming weeks.
- Pushing Back in the States
As state legislatures kick off their sessions, we’re watching closely. State-level attacks on the separation of church and state are often where the worst damage begins and then is replicated across the country. We’ll be sending updates on what to watch for and how to act – be sure to join our AU Action Network if you haven’t already.
- Engaging AU Members
Engaging our members is a top priority. We’re planning a survey to hear directly from you, our supporters, about what matters most and how we can better defend your rights.
- Building/Organizing/Uplifting Community at SRF
Our annual Summit for Religious Freedom (SRF) is happening April 5-7 in the greater Washington, D.C., area and virtually! Don’t miss the opportunity to join us as we strategize, organize, and amplify our impact to counter the rising tide of extremism. A new addition for this pivotal moment is the SRF Organizing Institute, an interactive, hands-on training institute to build the knowledge and skills you’ll need to advocate for church-state separation in your community.

No politician – whether it’s Donald Trump or anyone else – will deter Americans United from defending religious freedom for all. For the better part of a century, we’ve stood firm against attempts to erode church-state separation and we’re not stopping now.
Together, we can make a difference in these critical early days. The fight is here, and the fight is now. It's time to get to work. With hope and determination, Rachel K. Laser President and CEO |
