Walk in My Shoes volunteer notice - January 27th

“Walk in My Shoes” Coming Next Week! Volunteers Still Needed!

As part of our ongoing commitment to inclusion and raising awareness about disabilities, Lane will host “Walk in My Shoes” during P.E. classes on Monday, January 27th. The purpose of this event, made possible by the support of the Lane PTA, is to give general-education students a broader understanding of the daily situations faced by some of their friends with developmental challenges and learning differences. The program fosters empathy for others and gets students thinking about how they might be able to help a friend.

Walk in My Shoes requires a lot of adult support to be successful. We are still looking for volunteers to assist with many different activities. Help is needed during the times below.

  • 9:15 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (3rd through 6th Grade)
  • 12:45 – 4 p.m. (Kindergarten through 2nd Grade and Ms. Slomka’s 3rd Grade)

Each volunteer will receive a script and information regarding the activity and the challenge being explored. Depending on need, you may be asked to understudy a second station. Stations will be confirmed January 23rd. Please review the available slots and activity descriptions at the link below and click on the button to sign up. Thank you!

SCA End-of-Quarter Spirit Days Next Week

The SCA has planned two fun themed spirit days to bring the school together as we finish up the second quarter of the school year.

  • On Monday, January 27th, students and staff are invited to show off their best plaid and flannel style on “Plaid/Flannel Day.”
  • On Tuesday, January 28th, we’ll travel back in time to celebrate past fashions and fads on “1980s Day.”

We hope your child will participate!

Help Wanted: Seeking Dining Assistants for Our Cafeteria

Lane needs dining assistants to support our lunchtime routines in the cafeteria. The job is 3.5 hours a day (approximately 10:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.), Monday through Friday. Duties include monitoring students to keep order, assisting them as they clean up and clean tables, interacting with them in a positive way to assist them with their social skills, and dismissing them to their teachers.

We are looking for dedicated people who are friendly, energetic, and love working with children but can also be assertive to maintain expectations of cafeteria behavior.

Would you like to join our team? If so, please contact Assistant Principal Allen Dickens at adickens@fcps.edu.

National Mentoring Month - January

National Mentoring Month

Imagine a world where young people feel empowered, encouraged, and understood. Mentors can make that world a reality by helping young people find and follow their passions, excel in school, and thrive wherever they are.
Learn more about Mentoring Month.

Research has shown that young people with at least one trusted mentor are less likely to skip school, less likely to use illegal drugs or drink alcohol, and more prepared to enter college or the workforce. Yet one in three children lack a mentor.

All it takes is one person to serve as a trusted adult to help change a young person’s path in life. Mentors provide attention, support, and enrichment, and help connect their mentees to resources that may help them on their journey in life.

The FCPS MentorWorks program matches mentors with students in schools near where they live or work. They meet for at least 30 minutes a week. Learn more about how to become a mentor for an FCPS student. Contact Martha Macdonald, mentoring specialist, for additional information at mmacdonald@fcps.edu.

6th Grade Middle School Transition Activities Now Underway

Our oldest Lane Lions – our 6th graders – are beginning the process of moving on to middle school soon, as course selection continues. Our 6th graders will attend either Hayfield Secondary School or Mark Twain Middle School, depending on where they live.

If your 6th grade Lane Lion will attend Hayfield Secondary School, please make note of these upcoming Parent Coffees for rising 7th grade parents/guardians:

  • Friday, March 14th, 9 11 a.m., Middle School Lecture Hall (snow date to be determined)

You can find more information, including the 7th grade course catalog and a Virtual Curriculum Fair on the Hayfield website. Please contact Lane counselor Stephanie Kasparek or Bessie Fealey, Hayfield school counselor, if you have questions.

The Parent Coffee for Mark Twain will be held on Tuesday, June 4th, at 9 a.m.

Please feel free to contact Mrs. Kasparek at Lane or Stephen Fitzgerald, Director of Student Services at Twain, if you have any questions.

PTA News

Your Input Needed on Playground Shade Funds Reallocation!

The Lane PTA has an exciting opportunity to make meaningful improvements to our school, and your voice is crucial in guiding their next steps. As part of their effort to reallocate the funds raised for playground shade structures during the 2023 Read-a-thon (the structures were not able to be installed), they would like your input on which capital improvements will best serve Lane students and staff.

Lane staff members have already shared their top priorities: replacing the SMART Boards to enhance classroom technology and adding a key fob to the cafeteria door for improved security and accessibility. Now, the PTA would like to hear from you!

Your participation in this survey will help determine which projects should take priority, ensuring that the improvements made reflect the needs and priorities of the entire school community.

Please take a moment to fill out the survey. It only takes a few minutes, and your feedback is invaluable. Here is the link: https://forms.gle/xa33EzzvK6cepiwo9

The survey will be open through Friday, January 31st.

Thank you for being an active part of our school community. Together, we can make Lane an even better place for all to learn, grow, and thrive!

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

Winter weather is here! As a reminder, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy time outdoors. Schools monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind-chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside for activities like recess or physical education.

View Fairfax County’s Winter Weather/Extreme Cold safety tips.

If you need assistance getting cold-weather clothing for your family, please contact one of our family liaisons Melanie Crosby Hardy at macrosby@fcps.edu or Andrea Howard at ahoward@fcps.edu. You may also contact Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care.
