3 pm Hawai`i / 5 pm Pacific / 7 pm Central / 8 pm Eastern

Join Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary and Feiro Marine Life Center's 2025 co-hosted speaker series as we bring your marine focused presentations by subject matter experts.

In the first session for 2025 - which is a live only event, meet Jenn Tackaberry, a Research Biologist with Cascadia Research Collective, and one of a handful of entanglement responder with the highest level of authorization under NOAA Fisheries within the West Coast Large Whale Entanglement Response Network. During this live only event she'll talk about large whale entanglements, which are a growing concern in most regions of the world and a leading cause of death for humpback whales along the US West Coast. However, entanglements are rarely seen, and only a small percentage are reported. Each report provides an important opportunity to understand how and where whales become entangled, what they become entangled in, who the individual whale is, and the injuries sustained during entanglement.

Research on large whale populations provides key insight into entanglement durations, survival rates, and how to reduce the threat of future entanglements by identifying when and where whales may overlap with fishing efforts. During the presentation, we will discuss the current status of large whale entanglements, how the response network saves individual whales while collecting data necessary to prevent future entanglements, and Cascadia's research efforts to reduce the entanglement threat here in Washington State, as well as along the US West Coast.

The National Marine Sanctuaries Webinar Series provides educators with educational and scientific expertise, resources, and training to support ocean and climate literacy in the classroom. This series currently targets formal and informal educators, students (high school through college), as well as members of the community, including families. You can also visit the archives of the webinar series to catch up on presentations you may have missed here.

After registering you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.
