Good afternoon. It’s Wednesday, Jan. 22.

In today's newsletter:

  • The Alaska House and Senate will be led by ideologically aligned caucuses for the first time since 2016, after lawmakers elected their leaders for the legislative session that began Tuesday.

  • President Donald Trump says he’s changing the official name of North America’s tallest peak from Denali back to Mount McKinley. It’s the latest chapter in a long struggle over what the mountain should be called.

  • A new gambling venture started in Anchorage this week, in spite of an ongoing lawsuit opposing it, when the Native Village of Eklutna opened a limited gambling operation at the site of a future casino.

It was a bitterly frigid morning in northern New York when a passerby saw an alarming sight: A roughly 1,000-pound moose plunged into a semi-frozen lake. Faced with an unusual assignment, a crew of New York State Forest Rangers and environmental conservation officers knew they had to get creative to rescue the animal.

Anchorage weather

It's mostly cloudy today with a chance of scattered rain and snow showers and a high near 35 degrees. We'll see much of the same for the rest of the week as the forecast calls for a mix of snow and rain, with daytime temperatures hovering in the high 30s and low 40s.

Here’s what else is making headlines in Alaska today.
